"For Lila": An evening dedicated to the great archaeologist of Amorgos, Lila Marangou.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Ancient Tower of Agia Triada, under the cloudy full moon, we met to honor the memory of Lila Marangou.

The great archaeologist, Professor Emerita of Classical Archaeology, and also the woman who was deeply attached to Amorgos and dedicated a large part of her life to the study, promotion, and protection of the island's history and cultural heritage.

The evening began with a guided tour of the Ancient Tower by Dr. Giorgos Gavalas, a student and collaborator of Lila Marangou, who then spoke about her significant archaeological work. Lydia Karra, president of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage, spoke of her contribution to the protection of the island's cultural heritage, while we also heard from her close friend Nano Chatzidaki, Professor of Byzantine Archaeology at the University of Ioannina.

Above all, however, the evening was a gathering of people who knew and loved her. They responded to our invitation, either by being present or from afar, through their texts and videos, sharing their memories and love for Lila. In an evening filled with the songs she loved, the meze she preferred, and her favorite raki, Lila was, in a way, with us once again.

Amorgos will remember Lila and all that she did for the place she loved so much.
